A Beginner’s Guide to Snorkeling

A trip to Hawaii is a vacation of a lifetime! While you’re here, you’ll want to experience as much of the good times as possible. This includes eating amazing local food, seeing scenery more beautiful than you could ever imagine, attending a luau, and even partaking in a few activities you’ve never done before. For many travelers, this means snorkeling for the first time. How exciting!

How to Prepare for Snorkeling
In order to really make the most of your Koni, Hawaii snorkeling trip, a bit of preparation is helpful. If you don’t regularly swim, head to a local pool and get some practice in. Even better- buy or borrow some fins so you can practice swimming in snorkeling gear. It feels very different! Many brand new snorkelers have a tendency to try and swim along using their arms. This isn’t the best way to snorkel, for several reasons. You want to conserve energy by keeping your arms relaxed at your sides and focus on your legs and feet instead. Plus, kicking too hard and flailing with your arms creates a lot of splashing that will scare away the very animals you’re there to see!

Your Needed Snorkeling Gear
As mentioned above, you’ll need a few pieces of snorkeling gear for your trip in the water. That being said, one of the best things about snorkeling is how little equipment you actually need! You’ll only need a properly fitting mask, a snorkel, and a comfortable set of fins. Optional gear include an underwater camera and flotation gear. If you go with a guided trip, your snorkeling gear is provided for you by the tour company.
